While I agree a good instructor develops a "gut" feeling - an instinct - for what works and what doesn't work, reading your book makes me wish I had some training in instructional design. While my courses may be good, I suspect with the assistance of a professional such as yourself, they could become great.

Thanks for being a stop on the tour. I have to say the brain wave scans that you provide in the posting are fascinating. And highly informative.

The contrasts between actively being involved in learning (labs, exams and studying) verses being in class remarkable and comparing that with the watching of TV is remarkable. Yet further fuel for the fire that learning needs to be engaging and filled with activity...whether games are involved or not.

I have always said that good teachers naturally follow good instructional design whether they know it or not and I know that you do, in fact, follow sound, proven instructional design practices having sat in your sessions and reviewed your session evaluations.

You brought a great perspective to the book tour and provides some thought provoking concepts.

Thanks again for being part of the tour, very much appreciated and, again, fascinating connection with active vs passive learning and the brain wave results.

Found this post while pondering Second Life. I worked in IT for a large university and we experimented with using Second Life for a "virtual university experience" for a while in '05 and '06. Ultimately our experiment was scrapped. In reading the above, especially the bandwidth issues, it is easy to see that Second Life, if it survives at all, will be the domain of the furries and the goreans, not professionals looking for a metaverse. You have to admit though, back in '05 it looked like they just might pull it off. Linden gave us enough of a taste to excite the imagination but not enough tech to be able to follow through with it. There stab is/was admirable though, and they deserve their place as a small footnote in history. What saddens me was they had the right idea and the right time. Now that time is gone. I don't think even as all the tech issues are worked out (and I think they can be even today) that one company will be able to dominate so much as to create the next platform, or the 3D "game" web / metaverse. That time might have come and gone. How cool it would have been though. We will see taste of it, but if it ever comes about, which I'm skeptical, it will be scattered through out private corporate servers and be a hi tech unstandardized hodge podge that won't live up to the dream.

Before revolutionizing, its about democratizing education. And Apple I'm afraid is more about monopolizing. So in that sense, I think "free" ibook is inherently flawed in concept. As far as CK12 is concerned, the reason behind their genesis is passion not business like iBooks. Plus CK12 has been involved in some brilliant projects like the Utah Open Book project, LPS and the like and there has been verifiable success in most of them. But the real point is that unless you are able to make your technology accessible to everyone on every platform, you are not in it for revolution or even evolution of the way education is delivered and consumed.

The beauty of most android devices, however, is that with a little research and elbow grease you can root them and install any version of the OS that you'd like, right?

Amazon seems to have said that they 1) know that this will happen with their device and 2) aren't going to do anything to make it any more difficult than usual.

What excites me is the possibility of buying a $200 tablet and putting either honeycomb or ice cream sandwich on it... (a proposition that's easier than you'd think, and if past tablets and phones are any indication there will be lots of documentation out there very shortly)
